Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About . . .

Hello ER&L’er!!!

This is the first post regarding ” Library OKRA ” - the topic of a presentation given by Mason Hall and Jonathan Blackburn at the Electronic Resources and Libraries Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

We will be giving this presentation this afternoon at 2:00pm, and if you are looking at this site, you are probably interested in continuing the discussion begun there.

If you are interested, you can register for an account, or simply comment on this or later posts.

Though still not sure this is the best forum for this kind of discussion, we are eager to gauge interest in this idea and what might be done to generate further interest.

Maybe, next we should set up a Wiki? Forum?  Group page/listserv?

Excellent presentation, guys. People seem excited to continue this conversation, so a listserv seems like a good next step.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea to me too . . . but where? Google Groups jumps to mind . . . or I can set up Drupal OG.

  3. Jill Says:

What about tumblr which can be both blog/discussion list? see more: http://www.tumblr.com/api

Hmmm, I think I agree w/ Toni that something that allows e-mail posting is going to reach the greatest # of people. I think I am leaning at the moment toward setting up a Public Google Group.

People should be able to subscribe to this as an e-mail listserv, rss feed, or just check the group page every once in a while.

Plus, all the “cool kids” are already doing it.

    e.g. http://groups.google.com/group/apml-public and http://groups.google.com/group/dataportability-public

    Well, it’s done . . . I set up a google group at: http://groups.google.com/group/library-okra-public

I will create a post on it, as soon as I make sure that all the features work as planned . . . I may also discuss w/ the roundtable discussion group we are leading this morning.

  6. K.G. Schneider Says:

Well done, gentlemen! even without a voice-over I “got it.” Keep up the mo’!

  7. Patricia Thompson Says:

Wow, I wish I had gone to your presentation!

  8. Jeff Hall Says:

It seems like the OKRA effort ought to be (somehow) linked to the KBART project from NISO and the UKSG:

    http://www.niso.org/committees/kbart/index.html

Although they’re not necessarily pushing for a shared KB resource, they are pushing for “better” holdings data from content providers, so there seems to be a natural synergy between the two projects.

Great preso, by the way - I’m a bit skeptical than this problem can be solved outside the commercial vendor space, given the history of the JAKE project, but it’s a fine idea if enough people can commit to it.

  9. admin Says:

Wow, that is great info, Jeff.

I agree too that there are still a number of challenges for any projects like this getting off the ground.

    But who knows . . . maybe, it’s just a timing thing.

Thanks for the interest and kind words…
